Summary
Leather-covered, wooden, lidded box manufactured in England in the mid-seventeenth century for keeping documents. Interior is lined with printers waste from a seventeenth-century English theological treatise. Probably produced by a stationer or bookbinder [per bookseller]. Pencil note inside the lid, "Rodd sale, 1850, lot 495", identifying it as sold in the Sotheby February 1850 sales of the manuscripts of Thomas Rodd. Sotheby description for lot 495 of the Rodd sale lists "Kent. Title deeds to estates near Hearn, with signatures of members of the Oxenden family..."
