Artist: Work of amateur or primitive artist Pictured is a man in 17th or 18th century (Puritan like) dress, standing to right, head bowed, mouth slightly open as though speaking. His left arm is extended and his right hand points to a book sitting on the podium in front of him Provenance: Drawing is glued to the page of a scrapbook which bears a brass clasp inscribed "J.P. Kemble, 1816." The volume has a bookplate of David Belasco. Purchased by the Folgers from the sale of selected parts of the collection of David Belasco, held by the Walpole Galleries, New York, June 14, 1926 (cat. no. 403, item no. 178)
