Half length portrait, to right, looking front, wearing a hood tied under chin. Initialed in ink, bottom right, "A.B./Delin./Anno/1706." History: Unable to find similar rendering in FSL sources for portraits Provenance: The volume in which the portrait was formerly housed (DA 447 H22 H2 Cage) was purchased by the Library from J. Grant, an Edinburgh bookseller, in Aug., 1954. A note on the fly-leaf indicates that the book was purchased by Sir John Halket Bt., Pitfirrane, in 1845, from a London bookseller. There is also a signature on the title-page reading "Ja Sinclair." Subject: Portrait has been removed from "The life of Lady Halket" (published Edinburgh, by Symson and Knox, 1701) where it had been glued to the page facing the title page. This placement suggests that the portrait is meant to represent Lady Halkett. There are, however, no existing portraits of Lady Halkett listed in reference sources with which to compare this. Lady Anne (Murray) Halkett lived from 1622-1699 and is noted in the DNB as a Royalist and a writer on religious subjects. If the portrait is meant to represent Lady Halkett, it could not have been taken from life and is therefore either fanciful or drawn from memory This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
