Clear glass salt cellar housed in a 8.5 cm. x 16.4 cm. x 12 cm. wooden box with dovetail construction and wire hinges The box contains two notes: the first reads "This old salt cellar was given to me by Wm. Baker of Shottery, August 20 1897". The note is mounted on a thin piece of cardboard. Written on the back: "Memo of record - in my father's writing: mounted by me, to preserve it. J. W.". The second note reads: "Note - Re the "Hathaway" salt cellar. = I was with my father at the time. The salt cellar, he was informed, had been found in the Hathaway Cottage a great many years before. My impression is that the old lady said, by her grand-father. I am not sure of that - but am positive as to her statement that it was found in the cottage. - Query. - Were such articles made in the time of W. S. - ? Jefferson Winter"
