Provenance: part of a collection of 122 Shakespearean watercolors, most of which are attributed to Wright. The collection was purchased from a private owner by 'Sabin' ca. 1898 and sold to the Folgers by Gabriel Wells April 28, 1920 (formerly ART Inv. 289 no.88 - Cs. 889) Subject: depicts Mariana, seated at left, looking downward with her left hand raised to her shoulder. A young boy is seated right, profiled to left with his face turned full front to the viewer. He is playing a stringed instrument. The Duke, disguised as the friar, is standing in the doorway and there is a hat on the ground at right. The rough sketch differs in setting and places the young boy seated on a balcony railing behind and to the right of Marianna The play title is written on the verso; no act or scene divisions are given. '45' has been noted in pencil in the lower right corner of the image which is unsigned.
