General notes
"Two specimens of ancient knives, engraved with verses. The first, the blade of which is probably nearly as old as the time of Shakespeare ... is slightly illegible at the commencement, but may be read as follows, 'Lend mee not, least wrong'd be I / But let all borrowers gooe and buye.' The other, which is old but more recent than the first, is a small clasped knife in the form of a boot, with the lines, 'Hear is a leg and foot, / And a good blade too't.' The blade of this specimen is rusted, and one side is broken, but, on the whole, it is in tolerable preservation, and the verses are distinctly legible." -- J.O. Halliwell-Phillipps This is a PRELIMINARY RECORD. It may contain incorrect information. Please email HamnetHelp@folger.edu for assistance
