General notes
Artist: Items are grouped together due to a similarity in style, particularly in the outlining of buildings, the simplicity of line, and the coloring. There are no signatures nor any evidence as to who the artist may have been and the paintings are probably the work of an amateur None of the paintings are signed and only the smallest one is labeled Provenance: Items have been added to an extra illustrated copy of Mackenzie's Newcastle-upon-Tyne. For volume and provenance information see main entry under "Anonymous. Newcastle eccentrics." Subject: The subject matter of the items is concluded from the subject of the volumes in which they are housed. The first watercolor shows a town street running behind a square fortress. The second item is labeled "The Forth house" and pictures a house with a loggia running along its front (or back), trees on either side and a couple walking in the foreground. The third item probably illustrates a setting in the eastern suburbs of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. It shows a bridge over a river and a mill below the bridge This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance
