General notes
All sketches are labeled as to their subject and inlaid on pages across from engravings of the same subjects. Items are signed either F. Arundale or F.A Artist: Arundale is noted as an architect, traveler and topographer. He was a pupil of A. Pugin and studied at the RA schools in 1829. He traveled to Greece, Sicily, Italy and France and published a number of books which contained topographical sketches. He is listed in DNB as simply Francis Arundale (1807-1853) History: Drawings were used as the basis for engravings to illustrate Knight's Pictorial edition of the works of Shakespeare, edited by Charles Knight, published: London : Knight & Co., n.d. The figures in the drawings differ from those in the engravings and often the perspective is slightly changed. The engravings give both an artist and an engraver, so apparently the sketches were redrawn before engraving. The "list of illustrations" in the printed work notes that the engravings were taken from sketches by Arundale Provenance: Items are inlaid to volumes 3 and 7 of an extra illustrated copy of Knight's Pictorial edition of Shakespeare. For further provenance information see the entry for "Anonymous. True loveknot." Subject: The following subjects are illustrated: The interior and exterior of the Cathedral at Messina, Venetian remains of a church at Famagusta, Ruins of the Citadel at Famagusta, Venetian remains of the Piazza Famagusta, the Piazza of the Mosque at Famagusta, a view of Famagusta, the Parthenon at Athens, and the Temple of Theseus at Athens. Subject titles are taken from the labels underneath the drawings. Knight's Pictorial uses the sketches to illustrate settings of Much ado about nothing and Othello This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
