The central portion of the engraving shows the ground plan of the Vatican where the conclave was held. Beneath this two angels are lifting a curtain showing a city view including St. Peter's and the Castel Sant'Angelo. At the base of the image is a list of names of the attending popes. A rectangular frame inset into the ground plan shows the funeral procession of the old pope (Innocent XII). Two borders on the left and right divided into small frames show scenes of the death of the old pope and the election of the new one (Clement XI)
