"The affectionate shepheard was first published in London, in 1594. It appeared anonymously when its author, Richard Barnfield, was twenty years of age. This edition was designed and printed by Nicolas McDowall at The Old Stile Press ... The printing was completed in the early Spring of 1998. The images, which are by Clive Hicks-Jenkins, were produced using a variant of the nineteenth century printmaking technique known as cliché-verre. The essay, The enigmatic shepherd: the sweet & bitter love of Richard Barnfield (1574-1627), is by Dr. Peter Wakelin. All the paper used for this edition (including the endpapers) was hand-made at The Old Stile Press by Frances McDowall. The furnish used consisted of a mixture of Abaca and Jute, with an admixture of reeds & irises for the endpapers. The Bulmer types were generated by computer and polymer blocks were used throughout to print the book by letterpress. The materials used for the binding were designed by Clive Hicks-Jenkins and printed by Nicolas McDowall. The books were bound at The Fine Bindery, Wellingborough. ...
