History: Design was for Baty's production of Hamlet, staged from the 1603 version, which opened at the Theatre de l'Avenue, Oct. 8, 1928 Provenance: Design was purchased, along with the costume sketches, by the Folgers from Maggs Bros. through Wells, Feb. 7, 1929. The Folgers also purchased a manuscript copy of the music, written for the production by Andre Cadou (FSL W.b. 553) and a manuscript of Baty's 'Visage de Shakespeare,' an essay written to accompany this production of Hamlet (FSL S.a. 110). Formerly housed in a brown box, along with Robert Feau's costume designs for the production. The box was labeled "Amlet. Original manuscript and 59 original drawings" and numbered ART Inv. 294. Costume designs have been cataloged separately under Feau (ART Box F288 nos. 1-59) Signed "Gaston Baty 5 Juillet 1928."
