Part 2 of this work was published in 1644 in an unauthorized edition with title "Barnabas and Boanerges". Parts 1 and 2 were then published as "Judgement & mercy for the afflicted soules" in 1646 (Wing Q101 and Q102; spelling of title differs slightly for the two parts). Subsequenty the two parts were published separately (and later together) with title "Barnabas and Boanerges" or "Boanerges and Barnabas", by which latter title the entire work eventually became known The words "judgment and mercy" and "wine and oil" are bracketed together on title page Caption title on p. 1 and running title throughout read: Judgment and mercy for afflicted souls "Barnabas, or, The compassionate Samaritan, pouring oil into wounded spirits.
