Artist: Artist attribution is derived from several sources. A letter tipped into the front of the first volume describes the sketches as "hand painted illustrations render[ing] this copy one of peculiar interest and it wd. appear that they are the work of Burgess..." The bookseller Quaritch attributed the illustrations to H. Burgess. A Hilkiah Burgess was known to have worked with his father William Burgess (1755?-1813) on a set of prints of the Lincolnshire churches and of Lincoln and Ely Cathedrals (DNB). The BMC entry for the set of prints gives the names of both the father and son and dates the publication of the work 1800-1805 History: The printed work in which these drawings are housed contains plates which are by Burgess but none match the originals therein contained Provenance: The printed work in which the original wash sketches are interleaved is William Marrat's The history of Lincolnshire, topographical, historical, and descriptive, printed Boston [Eng.], 1814-1816. The copy was purchased by the Library in 1963 from Bernard Quaritch, cat. no. 836, item no. 912 The majority of the works are of churches though a few are of other historical structures in the county. One is a drawing of the ground plan of Spalding Abbey. All are labeled underneath and about half of them are initialed HB This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
