History: Drawings were engraved for illustrations to Knight's Pictorial edition of the Works of Shakespeare, London : Charles Knight & Co., [1838-1843] (PR2755K7 A1 copy 1 Sh.Col.). Some of the engravings vary from the originals, for example in the engraving of #3 the couple dancing (or fighting) left of center, have been removed. In the engraving of drawing #4, Dull in the acrobatic position, right of center, has not been included. FSL has two other original drawings by Buss for Knight's Pictorial of Love's labour's lost. (See entry under Buss) Provenance: Volume was purchased by the Folgers from Gabriel Wells in Dec. of 1920. The bookdealer's offer makes no mention of the connection between the drawings and Knight's Pictorial and describes Buss as "the artist famous for having been one of the illustrators of the Pickwick Papers." Subject: The 1st item is unidentified and pictures a rustic party. The 2nd is labeled "Young Tom at his first" and pictures a sword fight observed by a crowd. The other 20 items illustrate the Shakespeare plays noted above in the title. Illustrations are labeled with quotations from the plays but act and scene divisions are not given The 1st 8 items have been executed on separate sheets and glued down to the pages in the volume. The other 14 items were executed directly onto the pages of the volume. All but the first item are labeled either with a play title and or quotation, and or volume and page number. All of the drawings are signed. The last 14 items measure 8 1/2 x 11 1/2", the 1st 8 items vary in size This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
