General notes
Artist: Buss was a painter and illustrator who studied under George Clint A.R.A. Buss began his career as an illustrator for Knight and worked on several publications for him, including the Penny magazine, London and the Pictorial edition of Shakespeare History: Both drawings were engraved for illustrations to Knight's Pictorial edition of the Works of Shakespeare, published in London, no date. Although this edition is undated the drawings may first have appeared in the 1838 edition. Buss did illustrations for Merry wives, Richard II, and the Henry plays as well, plus more for Love' labour's lost. The Folger has another Art volume containing original sketches for these illustrations (ART Vol. c43) Provenance: Items are inlaid before p. 81 and 129 of Vol. 1 in an extra illustrated copy of Knight's Pictorial edition of Shakespeare, edited by Charles Knight, London : Knight & Co., [n.d.]. For further provenance information see the entry for "Anonymous. True loveknot." Sketches are labeled in pencil and inlaid on pages across from engravings of the same subjects. Both items are signed RW Buss Subject: The first drawing is labeled on the verso "King: In high born words etc." and illustrates Love's labour's lost, act I, sc. 1. The list of illustrations in the printed edition notes the engraving after this sketch as "Dull, Costard and Jacquenetta, design by R.W. Buss." The second drawing is labeled underneath "Costard: I will not fight with a pole like a northern man" illustrating act V, sc. III of Love's labour's lost. The list of illustrations notes this engraving as "Quarter-staff, design by R.W. Buss." This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
