General notes
Artist: John Carter, F.S.A. was an architectural draughtsman and antiquarian who published several works on ancient architecture, painting and sculpture. The ms. notations on the items are similar to the writing on plates which were engraved by Carter History: Carter engraved and published plates to a work entitled Specimens of the ancient sculpture and painting now remaining in this kingdom, the drawings made ... and engrav'd by Iohn Carter ... London, J. Carter, 1780-87. The book was reissued in 1838 and cataloger has been able to examine a copy of the second edition which does not appear to have plates depicting the subjects of the drawings noted here. Cataloger has been unable to look at a copy of the original publication. The designs found in the 1838 edition are executed in a similar fashion to the drawings found here. These items may have been intended for publication in the volume and may be contained in the original edition of 1780-87 Provenance: Items are glued into a volume which is labeled "Warwickshire, engravings and original drawings." For provenance information see entry for "Anonymous. Wollas Hall, co. Warwick." Subject: Three of the items are sheets containing rows of pencil sketches labeled as "statues drawn to one fourth of the original size in niches round the tomb of Thomas Beauchamp E. of Warwick in the middle of the choir of St. Mary's Church Warwick." The fourth item is a pen and ink sketch depicting the tomb of Sir John Cheney in the Beauchamp Chapel The first 3 items were executed in pencil with ink notes around them describing subject and scale of drawing to original. The fourth item is in pen and ink only. Items are signed in pencil "J. Carter F.S.A." The first sheet has a note dating the drawing to 1785 This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance
