General notes
Artist: John Carter, F.S.A. was an architectural draughtsman and antiquarian who published several works on ancient architecture in Great Britain. The ms. notations on the items are similar to the writing on plates which were engraved by Carter Both items have ms. notations describing their subjects. Neither item is signed but one has "Carter" written underneath the item in pencil, possibly by the compiler of the volume. Both items note, in ink on the drawing itself "Taken July 27, 1782." The second item has sketching on both the recto and verso History: Carter engraved and published plates to a work entitled Specimens of the ancient sculpture and painting now remaining in this kingdom, the drawings made ... and engrav'd by Iohn Carter ... London, J. Carter, 1780-87. The book was reissued in 1838 and cataloger has been able to examine a copy of the second edition which does not appear to have plates depicting the subjects of the drawings noted here. Cataloger has been unable to look at a copy of the original publication. The designs found in the 1838 edition are executed in a similar fashion to the drawings found here. These items may have been intended for publication in the volume and may be contained in the original edition of 1780-87 Provenance: Items are glued into a volume which is labeled "Warwickshire, engravings and original drawings." For provenance information see entry for "Anonymous. Wollas Hall, co. Warwick." Subject: The first item is titled "Drawing of a tomb in St. Michael's Church, Coventry," this title being followed by a more thorough description of the tomb in what is assumed to be Carter's hand. The second item, which has two complete drawings, one on the recto, one on the verso, represents 2 views of a monument at St. Michael's and is also accompanied by a detailed ms. description This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
