Lady Essex Cheke was the daughter of Robert Rich, Earl of Warwick, and Penelope Devereux (daughter of the first Earl of Essex), and the wife of Sir Thomas Cheke. Their daughter Essex was first married to Sir Robert Bevill of Chesterton, Huntingdonshire before her marriage to the Earl of Manchester in 1642
