General notes
Artist: Attribution taken from pencil notes on the item History: The engraving on which the sketches have been drawn was engraved by F. Bartolozzi and published Nov. 15, 1785 by W. Lowndes & Partners. The engraving which has the sketches on it lacks the imprint and appears to be a proof copy. A copy of the engraving with the imprint is found in FSL ART File S528c2 no. 8. The Folger also has a watercolor sketch of the design, attributed to Cipriani, in ART Box C577 no.1. The print was used as the frontispiece to a separate issue of Coriolanus, or, the Roman matron ... altered by Mr. T. Sheridan, with the variations in the manager's book, at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. London : Printed for J.F. & C. Rivington, T. Longman, B. Law ... W. Lowndes, etc. 1789. (FSL call no. PR 2805 1789a cop.1 Sh.Col.) Provenance: Item has been inlaid after page 304 of Coriolanus which is volume 11, part 2 of an extra illustrated copy of the Works of Shakespeare, 1881 edition, edited by Staunton. For complete volume and provenance information see entry for "Anonymous. Romeo taking poison for the loss of Juliet." Sketches were executed on the margins of an engraving and the engraving has been marked in red on the sections for which the pencil sketches were made to correct or detail. A pencil note in the margin reads: "These improvements were made by Mr. Cipriani and the plate returned to Mr. Bartolozzi." On the back of the item a note in a different hand reads "do not destroy any part of the pencil markings." Also in the verso are the initials ST in ink. Unsigned Subject: The sketches are details of the hand, face and robe of Coriolanus's mother who is leaning over Coriolanus. The engraving is marked in red chalk on the places where the supposed corrections were to have been made. The engraving illustrates act II, sc. 1, "Cor.: You have I know petitioned all the gods for my prosperity."
