General notes
Artist: Cook was an historical painter and book illustrator, made R.A. in 1822, after which time he apparently stopped painting. He was known for his ink and grey wash technique which the drawings noted here are good examples Drawings are small and rectangular. Some have opaque highlights and one is a watercolor. Unsigned History: Drawings were executed as designs for engravings to illustrate an edition of the plays of Shakespeare, printed from the text of Johnson, Steevens and Reed and printed in London for Longman, etc. in 1807. Copies of the resulting engravings have been inlaid to the same extra-illustrated volumes that contain the original sketches. Although the edition was published in 1807, several of the engravings are dated 1806. Cook is noted as the artist of 6 of the engravings in the Longman edition, 4 of which are represented in this set of drawings. The 5th original noted here was engraved by C. Heath and published by Longman in 1821. (Design for Othello) FSL copy of the 1807 edition is PR 2752 1807a Sh.Col.
