History: Drawing is part of a series of designs done for the 'Darley gallery of Shakespearean illustration' (published in 1884) which was made up of 30 illustrations to Shakespeare's plays. This drawing, however, was never reproduced for the printed edition

Depicts Lady Macbeth sleepwalking. On the verso is a large unfinished sketch of three men in battle which is labeled in pencil "Sir Gillum of Mydeltoun, Percy's Ballads" (a legend retold in Thomas Percy's collection "Reliques of ancient English poetry")
