Summary
Unpublished manuscript describing and beautifully illustrating several hundred crosses in market-places, grave markers, etc. mostly in England. Also contains a copy of a poem, The cross, by Charles Joseph Latrobe (published in Solace of song, 1837) and The Crucifixion (unpublished?) by J.W.B, Salop, 1843. Includes an index to the contents of the volume in the back. Two loose leaves left in the volume contain printed drawings of bookcases

Pencil note indicates that Dukes was the editor of E. Lloyd's Antiquities of Shropshire, 1844 A note on the front flyleaf verso explains that, in his seventy third year, Dukes compiled this volume for his daughter, Eliza Ellen Panting. It was presented to her on March 29, 1844, her birthday, "as a Memorial of a Father's Affection and Love for a dearly beloved Child." Formerly Folger MS Add 797 Purchased from H.D.
