General notes
Artist: Unable to identify initials. Name of artist is not given in William Winter's Life and art of Edwin Booth in which two sketches by AB are reproduced. Examinations of manuscripts to William Winter from people with initials AB yielded no clues nor did Winter's annotated copies of the printed work History: Drawing was reproduced as an illustration to William Winter's Life and art of Edwin Booth, N.Y. : Macmillan, 1893 (facing page 3) Provenance: Card for item in Mrs. Folger's file notes drawing as "From Belasco and Wm Winter Collections." Card in framed painting file notes it as "Belasco Sale, Walpole Galleries, 11/9/26." The Walpole sale catalogs of Belasco and Winter sales do not include a listing of this item and the case number has not been identified, therefore this provenance cannot, at present, be verified Subject: According to notations in an annotated copy of The life and art of Edwin Booth, the house which is pictured in this sketch is not the house in which Edwin Booth was born. Winter notes in his copy (FSL ms. W.a. 230) on a piece of paper glued to the illustration: "There is an error here. The cottage at Belair represented in this picture is one that was built in 1852 [by Jasper Gifford]. The home in which Edwin Booth was born, a log cabin, stood where this cottage now stands." This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance Title in ink on Folger copy; same title written in pencil at bottom, erased. Also in ink at bottom "original drawing." Drawing has been removed from a mitered wooden frame with glass which bore a label in lower left corner "41." Another illegible label was partially scraped away from the upper right corner of the glass. Initialed bottom left of drawing "AB '93."
