Item information about Folger Z.d.37

From dealer's description: "This seventeenth century English heraldic fob seal matrix was made for a member of the Schofield family. At the heraldic visitation of Lancashire made by Sir William Dugdale (1605-1686) in 1664 the Scofield (or Schofield) family of Scofield were recorded as entitled to bear “Argent a Fess between three Bull’s Heads couped Gules.” The sealing of letters with wax was a ubiquitous aspect of early modern correspondence, however relatively few seal matrices of this kind have survived." Ordered from Samuel Gedge, D 9208, 2018-05-21, catalog 26, item 21
