Purchase made possible by The Charles W. Engelhard Acquisitions Fund From dealer's description: "First edition in German? 4to (14 x 18cm) [12]pp., title-page with woodcut coat of arms, title-page a little dusty, second leaf shaved at head not affecting sense of text, light wear, unbound. A scarce German translation summarising the articles of peace between King James I of England and Philip II drawn up in 1604 at the Treaty of London, signed 18 August 1604, which brought to a conclusion the Anglo-Spanish War. The date in the title here of 25 August 1604 suggests that this text was based on a letter of that date sent out by Robert Cecil (1563-1612) to several English diplomats for use as they deemed necessary. Under the terms of the treaty England agreed to cease disruption of Spanish transatlantic shipping, open the English Channel to Spanish ships and withdraw support from rebels in the Dutch Revolt. In return, Philip III renounced Spanish ambitions to restore Roman Catholicism in England and recognised the Church of England. Not in Shaaber."
