Summary
Reading notes comprising an abridgement and miscellany using paraphrases from Fuller and intermingling accounts from other sources. The first section consists largely of paragraph-length excerpts from the Holy war (pages 1-49), followed by 7 pages of "Certaine Extravagant notions not referd to any generall head" (pages 50-53), each separated by dashes, some of which do not to be linked to Fuller. In the second section of notes from The holy state, the compiler abandons Fuller's order, presenting the profiles of characters often according to themes (e.g. notes on the Constant virgin (pages 54-61) precede the sections "Of Marriage," "The good wife," and "The good widdow" (pages 61-65)), before a selection of the essays ("Of contentment," "Of Moderation," etc. (leaves 93v-107v)) and 11 "Lives" (Paracellus (leaf 108), William Perkins (leaf 109), William Cambden (leaf 110r), Lady Jane Grey (leaves 110r-111v), Sir Francis Drake (leaves 111v-112r), Sir John Oldcastle (leaves 112v-113(a)v) Burleigh (leaf 113(b)) Joan of Arc (leaves 113v-114r) Joan of Naples (leaf 114), Edward, the Black Prince (leaf 114), Edward IV (leaf 114), and Cardinal Wolsey (leaf 114)); the biography of Lady Jane Grey includes "A part of this her life writ by Sam Clark" (111v) and the life of Oldcastle appears entirely from other sources ("see Sam Clark. Collected out of the book of Martyrs & Speeds Chronicle" (leaves 113(a)v-113(b)r)). A final section given the heading "The Extravagants, or Miscellanies" (leaf 115-123v)) consists of much shorter excerpts and paraphrases from Fuller, including reworking of text from his Andronicus (e.g. in reference to May 29 1660, "we must hereafter date the beginning of our happiness from that day...as the new birth day of our English freedom" (leaf 121v)
