Notes
General notes
"Africa" is on a cartouche surrounded by eight lines of verse beginning "And Africa may truly vaunt." Numbered "3" in plate. From a set of 4 prints after designs by Francis Barlow depicting fauna associated with Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. The prints were advertised in John Overton's catalogue of 1672 as "The four quarters of the World." Parthey attributed the set to Wenceslaus Hollar; however, Pennington lists them as "not by Hollar," and they are now thought to be the work of Richard Gaywood The first plate in the set (Europe) includes the imprint "Sold by Ar. Tooker at [the] Globe in [the] Strand."
