There are 7 illustrations executed on 5 sheets of paper which were placed together and folded in half to form a booklet. The sketches are drawn in black ink and some areas have been colored in with an orange/red crayon. Each sketch is labeled with play title and act and many of the figures have the actor's name noted by them. There are ink sketches of heads on the versos of three of the drawings. The paper bears a watermark reading 'Haselmere/Second Fine'. All of the drawings are signed
Artist: Gladys B. Goodman was the daughter of Arthur Jule Goodman (fl. 1889-1913), an illustrator and painter of theatrical portraits who did work for the Pall Mall magazine, The illustrated London news, and other London magazines. He was aquainted with Augustin Daly and William Winter. A letter in the FSL collection from him to Daly dated July 4, 1895 briefly mentions his daughter Gladys (Y.c. 4088 2). Gladys B. Goodman has not been located in any reference sources
Subject: Drawings illustrate the London production of 'The geisha' which was presented at Daly's Theatre under the management of George Edwardes. The play was billed as 'Mr. Edwardes' Japanese musical comedy...Words by Owen Hall. Music by Sidney Jones. Lyrics by Harry Greenbank.' The following actors are pictured and where known the character they portrayed is noted: Letty Lind (Molly Seamore), Maude Hobson, Hayden C. Coffin (Reginald Fairfax), Laura Kearny, Harry Monkhouse, and Juliette Nesville. FSL has two playbills pertaining to productions of 'The geisha' in the scrapbook collection (SCRAPBOOKS, DALY, A. Provenance: These sketches were removed from the Augustin Daly Collection 2/3/66. A note on the verso of one of the items 'Daly corr. The Daly collection was purchased by Mr. Folger from a variety of sources and the seller of these items has remained anonymous
