Artist: Groesbeck is noted in Feilding as a painter and illustrator residing in San Francisco, entered under Grosbeck rather than Groesbeck. A scrapbook presented to the Folger with photographs of Groesbeck's work spells his name as it is entered here, as does the title page of a book he illustrated in 1908, Josheph Conrad's Point of honor
History: Work is part of a series of theatrical portraits done by Groesbeck of characters in the same production. FSL has photographs of this portrait and the portraits of the other cast members in ART Flat b25
Subject: Edna May Oliver is pictured here in the character of Juliet's nurse for her performance in that role for the MGM film of Romeo and Juliet, released in 1936. The film was directed by George Cukor, produced by Irving Thalberg and starred Norma Shearer as Juliet and Leslie Howard as Romeo
Provenance: Painting was given to the Library by Col. Charles E. Hammond on July 20, 1970. ac 204391. Item was formerly framed and listed in FSL painting file. It was removed from the frame and was part of the travelling exhibit Shakespeare, the Globe and the world. The portrait was reproduced in the catalog for the exhibit
