This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance Half length portait to right, hands in front, partially seen, rings on the fingers of both hands, wearing hat. In pencil underneath: 'The original minature by Harding'. Signed in upper left hand corner in gold Artist: Harding was the son of Silvester Harding and followed in his father's line of work, painting historical portraiture, often in minature and frequently for the purpose of engraving. Both Hardings were copyists who took their portraits from artists contemporary to the subject. This portrait is taken from one by Holbein or of the school of Holbein (see below) History: Drawing is after a portrait of Henry VIII listed as no.157 in the 1901 catalogue of the National Portrait Gallery. The painter is given as unknown. However, an engraving of the portrait listed as no.18 under the heading for Henry VIII in the B.M. cat of Eng. ports., gives the engraver as anonymous and notes it as a plate to Cavendish's Life of Wolsey, 1825. The engraving in the published work notes that the portrait is 'from an original picture by Holbein, in the collection of Barret Brydges esq. At Lee Priory Kent'. Published in London, 1825 by Harding, Triphook and Lepard. A copy of this engraving, lacking imprint, precedes the watercolor described above, in the extra illustrated volume. FSL also has another copy of the watercolor, also signed but dated 1808 and noted to be taken from an original picture on copper by Holbein in the collection of S.E. Brydges at Denton Court near Canterbury, (FSL ART Box H263 no.1) Provenance: Item is inlaid before p.429 of the printed text in vol.13 of a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. For complete provenance information see record for Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer Published work: Cavendish, George. Life of Wolsey ... London, 1825
