Please consult Curator for assistance Nearly three quarter length portrait, standing, to front, right hand holding cape over shoulder. Title from penciled label underneath painting. Unsigned Artist: Drawing is similar to a print by Silvester Harding (see below) and a penciled note on the flyleaf of the volume which houses the drawing credits Harding as artist of some of the original drawings inside History: Portrait appears to have been designed for an engraving of Lowin which was published in Harding's Shakespeare illustrated, 1793. Harv. cat. of dram. ports. lists the engraving as no.3 under the entry for Lowin and gives the engraver as T. Nugent. FSL copy of the engraving is dated 1792 and notes that the portrait is after a picture in the Ashmolean Museum (FSL ART Vol. e32 no.23). FSL has another watercolor portrait of Lowin also attributed to Harding in ART Vol. d7 no.13, which is a bit larger and has a darker background Subject: Lowin was an actor during Shakespeare's times and is noted on the list of actors in the 1647 folio of Beaumont and Fletcher and the 1623 folio of Shakespeare Provenance: Item is inlaid in an extra illustrated ed. of Shakespeare.
