Artist: Hedger is responsible for at least two other sketches from the same collection. The sketches are usually copied from prints. Cataloger unable to find Hedger listed in art reference sources History: Sketch is copied after the frontispiece to a tract attributed to Nicholas Goodman, entitled Hollands Leaguer: or, An historical discourse of the life and actions of Dona Britanica Hollandia the arch mistris of the wicked women of Eutopia ... London, printed by A.m. for Richard Barnes, 1632 (STC 12027). A copy of the frontispiece woodcut is housed in the same collection with this item, however it has been erroneously attributed to another work, with the same title, by Shackerley Marmion. (ART Inv. 271 no.8a) Provenance: Item is part of a collection of engravings, original drawings, newspaper clippings and ms. notes concerning the early London theaters. The collection was purchased by the Folgers from Maggs Bros. April, 1925. There is no indication in the case information as to who may have formed the collection Subject: Drawing depicts a house of ill-fame, which is described in the tract Hollands Leaguer, standing on an island, with a drawbridge and a warden to guard it. This house of ill-fame was said to have been located on the Bankside of London, in the section known as Paris Garden; Hollands Leaguer being claimed as the manor house of the gardens. Aside from the moral tract by Goodman, a comedy concerning the house was also written by Shackerley Marmion and published 1632 (STC 17443).
