General notes
Artist: Drawing may be a sketch by Lawrence for the portrait but is more likely copied from the portrait or from an engraving Drawing is unfinished, picturing, the head and shoulders only and the top of the left hand. Kemble is looking to left. Unsigned History: Drawing is after a portrait of Kemble as Coriolanus, painted by Sir Thomas Lawrence, now housed at the Guildhall Art Gallery, which was engraved by W.O. Burgess and published by M.M. Holloway in 1839. It was probably engraved by others and published at other dates as well. The painting was exhibited at the RA in 1798 and was probably engraved before 1839 Provenance: Item is inlaid after p. 262 in volume 6 of an extra illustrated copy of the Works of Shakespeare, 1881 edition, edited by Staunton. For complete volume and provenance information see entry for "Anonymous. Shakespeare's Crest." Subject: Kemble is pictured in the painting, full figure, standing on steps, to front, looking to left, with his left hand holding his cloak front. When exhibited at RA the painting was entitled "Mr. Kemble as Coriolanus, at the hearth of Tullus Ausidius."
