Artist: Drawing is after the well known portrait of Kemble as Hamlet by Sir Thomas Lawrence, listed as no. 694 in the 1901 catalogue of the National Portrait Gallery. FSL has a copy of the painting which is attributed to George Henry Harlow, after Lawrence Full figure portrait, standing to front, looking upward and to the left, arms down by sides, skull in left hand. In pencil underneath "India drawing." Unsigned History: Picture was exhibited at the R.A. in 1801 and was engraved numerous times. The earliest date on engravings of the picture listed in the BM Cat. and Harv. Cat. of eng. dram. ports. is 1805, engraved by S.W. Reynolds for Boydell & Co. This drawing may possibly have been done as a study for an engraving or after an engraving. FSL copies of the eng. show the eyes looking directly above, rather than above and to the left. There is also a difference in the curve of the wall at the left in the picture Provenance: Item is inlaid before p. 469 of the printed text in volume 17 of a 21 volume extra illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's Works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe.
