Approximately 82% of Milton's text in Book 1 is from George Downame's "Commentarii" in Petrus Ramus "Dialecticae libri duo" (1669 edition); in Book 2 approximately 73% derives from Downame's text. Milton was in effect editing Downame's commentary, purging it of postclassical examples. Cf. Lusignan, Francine. Dolle sculpsit The first leaf is blank Page 228 is misnumbered 223 Leaf A11 is signed B1; A12 is unsigned and replaces B2; B1 and 2 are cancelled, with stubs and sometimes several letters of text visible
