Artist: Jones is noted in the New York times directory of the American theater for costuming Swing it in 1937, Life and death of an American, 1939 and Morning star in 1940. He is known to have worked with the Federal theatre project Drawings are all labeled as to the play, character, costume number and actor. Two of the drawings are accompanied by swatches of fabric. Each is signed and dated in pencil in the lower right corner and one is inscribed to John I Glidden Provenance: Sketches have been removed from an extra illustrated copy of Charles Knight's Imperial edition of the works of Shakespeare. The volume has been supplemented with clippings, photographs, pictures of actors and actresses and scenes from plays, pasted onto the text. These designs were glued into the pages of Twelfth night. The volume bears the bookplate of J.I.G. Glidden and was given to the Library in 1951 by Mrs. Ernest Warren. (Removed from ART Vol. b61) Subject: There is no listing for a 1935 production of Twelfth night in the New York times directory of the theater so it is presumed the designs were executed for a production outside of New York. Three of the designs are for Viola's costumes and are labeled for the actess Miss Suzanne Caubaye. One of the designs is for Sebastian, played by Douglas Chandler and the fifth design is for Sir Toby Belch, played by Royal Dana Tracey. All three actors are noted in the New York times directory of the theater as performing in New York This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
