Item information about Folger V.a.694
From dealer's description: "ARTHUR LAKE (1569-1626) the Bishop of Bath and Wells and a translator of the King James Version of The Bible. ESTC records posthumous publications of some of his sermons. A volume of unpublished manuscript sermons are held at the Folger Library. SAMUEL YERWORTH (1590/1-1665), is recorded on CCEd (51833) as having a BA and an MA but they do not state where he studied. He held various positions in West Counties as: minister, curate, chaplain, vicar, as well as a brief spell as a school master. The manuscript is written in Samuel Yerworth's hand throughout. His style varies with a clear upright hand for headings and also part way through the dedication, and the main text being in a sloping hand. The two styles are both used in the title page. The manuscript retains the pencil border guidelines to the edges of the margins and several guidelines in the initial lines of text. There are several corrections to the text in Yerworth's hand, using small strips of paper which he has neatly tipped in. Dedidcation reads, “To the Right Wor[shi]p[fu[ll] Esq / John Buckland / one of his Ma[jes]ties Justices of / the Peace for the Countie / of Somerset.†[2 leaves]. Signed at the end, “An unworthie servitour / to ye Gospell / Samuel Yerworth. / Shipham / May 17. / 1661.†The main text is in three sections. It is headed, “Ebr. XII. 1, 2.†First section commences with the opening lines from Greek which is then translated into English, “Let us run wth patience ye race that is / sett before us...†A side note reads “Concio / Ia. upon / Good Fri- / dat: at / Worcest- / er.†[13 leaves] Second section. “who for ye joy that was sett before him / &c.†A side note reads “Concio / IIa. upon / East. day.†[8 leaves] Third section return to, “Let us runne with patience ye race that is / set before us, looking unto Jesus. But here Lake treats the subject differently to the first sermon. A side note reads “Concio / IIIa. on / East. / Tuesd. [10 leaves] There is an interesting note by Yerworth in the dedication which points to Lake's manuscripts having come to him as fair copy, “The originall manuscripts / whereof (with manie other of ye / same Authour hitherto unpub- / lished) by Providence brought / into my possession, I have heer / somewhat fairer, than to mee they / came, transcribed...†he continues to give his reason for transcribing the work being, “as a testimonie / (the best I have at present) of the / thanks I owe for your favour / once towards mee...†This manuscipt is clearly linked to a similar manuscript at the Folger Library. It was transcribed by the same scribe in the same year. Accession No.: MS Add 354; Call Number: V.a.394. That manuscript is entitled, 'Christ's conflict with and conquest of the tempter ... laid forth in VI quadragesimall sermons ... preached at Worcester, 1612/13 and 1613 ... now first presented to public view [manuscript], 1661.' And it is dedicated to Dr. Creighton by its transcriber Samuel Yrwith." Ordered from Dean Byass, Manuscripts & Rare Books, D 9021, 2016-10-17, Email quote
