Purchase made possible by The Elizabeth L. Cabot Acquisitions Fund From dealer's description: "Only edition of mathematician and land surveyor William Leybourn's practical work on astronomy, geography, trigonometry, horologiography, navigation, and astrology. Leybourn, who in 1648 wrote, with Vincent Wing, Urania Practica, the first substantive English compendium of astronomy (DNB), was also well known as one of six surveyors chosen to assess damage done to the City of London by the Great Fire in 1666. His Introduction to Astronomy and Geography is essentially a book of reasonably complex word problems, mostly in astronomy, geared toward the advanced and ambitious student. Illustrated with a folding line-engraved plate of globes and astronomical diagrams, tipped to the lower free end." Ordered from WS Cotter Rare Books & Restoration, D 9036, 2016-11-30, Email quote
