Most of the letters discuss Mr. Macready's performances and work in various Shakespeare plays including Merchant of Venice, Macbeth, Hamlet, the Tempest, Othello and Richard III. Several mention Macready in William Tell. Many letters mention a Mrs. Reid, possibly referring to Elizabeth Jesser Reid. (26) The letter to Carlyle is about Covent Garden Theatre

General notes

Several letters include integral address leaves and postmarks with dates. Many of the letters are dated with just a month and day (no year). Some of the letters are addressed from Tynemouth, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Ambleside and to London. (30) is on mourning paper
