Charles Kean sits in a chair with his feet in a steaming tub resting on a folio volume labeled "Shaksp[eare]." A phantom figure of Macbeth, his shield reading "Sleep no more," rises from a bowl of hot gruel on the table to Kean's right. To his left, another table with a bottle of medicine labeled: "C. Kean Esq as often as required" and a small open book on which is written "Critiques Times & c." A pile of letters and envelopes lie in a basket and on the floor below
