General notes
The first of seven manuscript scores bound in a single volume. Transcribed by John Saville, a lay vicar of Lichfield, and attributed to Matthew Locke. The works are scored for voices, orchestra and basso continuo. Bound with this manuscript score are stage works, an ode and incidental music by Henry Purcell and John Worgan Music composed for William D'Avenant's adaptation of Macbeth, with inclusion of songs from Thomas Middleton's The witch This setting now considered to be the work of Richard Leveridge; the widespread misattribution to Matthew Locke began with William Boyce's edition of 1770 (see Winkler, A.E.
