General notes
Frontispiece portrait of the author by William Faithorne (plate) signed: R White sculp: Most of the 12 illustrations for Paradise lost are engraved by Michael Burghers or Peter Paul Bouche According to K.A. Coleridge, p. 274, "Jacob Tonson issued two collections in 1695, parts of which are in large part the same, but with different arrangements". The first collection has a general title page with title "The poetical works of Mr. John Milton". The second collection (the work being catalogued here) lacks general title page and always contains the 1695 editions of the works included, i.e. "Paradise lost", Hume's "Annotations", "Paradise regain'd", "Samson Agonistes", and "Poems upon several occasions" (usually in that order, though Hume's "Annotations" is sometimes be bound at the end). Coleridge notes that the second collection "is not always complete The parts seem to have been sold separately and to have been bound up in various ways" Each part has separate dated title page (each dated 1695), pagination, and register Cf. Wing M2163, the first collection, with general title page "Poems upon several occasions" filmed separately as Wing M2162 on UMI microfilm set "Early English books, 1641 to 1700" reel 610 Signatures: pi1 [A]² B² C-2Y⁴; ²A-H⁴ I²; ³A-H⁴; ⁴[A]² B-D² [dagger]D² E-Q²; ⁵[A]1 B-4M² [4N]1 Pagination: [4], 219, [1], 219-343, [3]; [2], 321, [1]; [2], 66; [6], 57, [1]; [4], 9, [2], 10-11, [2], 12-60 p., [13] leaves of plates
