Title devised by cataloger According to Yvonne Romney Dixon, George Romney's earliest sketches of the Banquet scene in Macbeth date to 1786 and he revisited the theme in 1792 in preparation for a never-executed painting for the Boydell Gallery ("Designs from fancy" : George Romney's Shakespearean drawings / by Yvonne Romney Dixon. Washington, D.C. : Folger Shakespeare Library, 1998, p. 186) Other Romney drawings of the Banquet scene in Macbeth at the Folger Shakespeare Library (several sketches in ART Vol. c59, ART Vol. c60, and ART Vol. b6), the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge (L.D. 123, 124, 126 and B.V. 138-40), Yale University (1979.12.203, 1979.12.207, 1979.12.210, 1979.12.212, B1991.8.45), Princeton University (1948.1560, 1565, and 1570) Purchased at Christie's, London, Sale 6574, "Andrew Wyld: Connoisseur Dealer," 10 July 2012, lot 37, along with Romney drawings of the Infant Shakespeare nursed by Comedy and Tragedy (lot 30; now Folger ART 267- 541) and Lady Macbeth (lot 31; now Folger ART 267- 542) Stamp of A.A. de Pass ("A de P.") in lower right corner (Lugt, Frits.
