Artist: Russell is a professor of costume design in the Dept. of Drama at Stanford University. He designed costumes for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival from 1948 to 1961 History: The Hamlet designs were executed for the Stanford Players production of 1963. Russell notes the designs as having been based on the paintings of German romantic painter Casper David Friedrich. The Midsummer night's dream designs were done for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, summer of 1961, based, according to Russell, on 'ideas from the painter Rubens but with colors from Watteau.' (FSL has program from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival 1961 season, see program collection). The Macbeth designs were executed for the Yale School of Drama in 1961, as partial fulfillment for an M.F.A. degree Items have been executed on artist's board except for the 2 ink sketches (ART Box R962 no.4 & 6) which are pattern details for the designs to Hamlet and are on machine made paper. All of the items, but for those two, are labeled with character names and are initialed. The designs for Midsummer night's dream and Macbeth have material swatches attached. The Hamlet designs measure 6 1/4 x 10 in., the Midsummer night's dream 10 x 15 in. and the Macbeth 15 1/4 x 10 1/4 in Provenance: Designs were given to the Library by the artist in April of 1979 for use in the travelling exhibit Shakespeare, the Globe and the World. ART Box R692 no.13 the design for the Witches in Macbeth was exhibited and is pictured in the exhibition catalog on p.192. Ac 219636 Subject: Hamlet designs are for Ghost, 1st Player, Hamlet's 1st costume and Gertrude, plus 2 pattern details for the Hamlet and Gertrude costumes (ART Box R962 no.1-6). The 2 Midsummer night's dream items are group drawings showing 15 costumes altogether (no.7-8). The 5 Macbeth designs are for Caithness, Porter, Lady Macbeth (1st costume), Malcolm, and the Witches (no.9-13).
