General notes
Artist: Scassellati is noted in the 1978/79 season program for the Missouri Repertory Theater as having been the resident costume designer for MRT and University Playhouse since 1961, designing for productions of The misanthrope, Mary Stuart, and The imaginary invalid among others. He is also noted as coordinator of the UMKC Theater Costume Museum Drawings are full length designs, labeled with character's name, play and theater. Fabric swatches are attached to the left of the designs, with staples. Drawings are done on brown paper History: Designs were executed for the Missouri Repertory Theater's 15th anniversary season (1978/79) production of Julius Caesar. The production was directed by Michael Langham. Alan Nichols played Julius Caesar, Robert Elliot, Antony, Peter Aylward was Octavius and Ellen Crawford played Portia. Library has a copy of the season program in the Program Collection (2 drawings by Scassellati are reproduced on the cover). The design for Antony and Octavius was exhibited in the FSL travelling exhibit Shakespeare, The Globe and The World and was reproduced in the catalog of that exhibit on p.198 (no.8) Provenance: Designs were turned over to the Library by the exhibit office of Shakespeare, The Globe and The World. They were probably given to the exhibit by either the artist or the Missouri Repertory Theater. (Accessioned 4/82) Subject: The 1st design is the costume for Antony and Octavius. A pencil note next to the drawing reads 'difference in decoration to personalize Octavius/more ornate than Antony'. To the left of the full figure drawing is a pencil sketch labeled 'Octavius Armor'. In bottom right corner a note indicates the design is for Act IV, Sc. 1. The second design is also full figure, noted as 'Portia/Nightgown' This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
