General notes
Artist: Though neither item is signed or bears any notation of the artist, the similarity in the style of the watercolors indicates that they were executed by the same hand. The drawings bear a slight resemblance to the watercolor technique of John Augustus Atkinson though there is no evidence to link these drawings to his hand Both items are on wove paper, inlaid and added to an edition of the plays. The All's well drawing is on J Whatman's Turkey Mill paper, a portion of the watermark being visible though the paper has been cut from a larger sheet. Neither item is signed or labeled History: Drawings have been compared to engravings in the FSL art file but do not match any found there Provenance: Drawings have been inlaid to pages in volume six in a 21 volume extra-illustrated copy of the 1857 edition of Shakespeare's works, edited by Dyce and formerly owned by Robert Hoe. Drawings have been added before pages 469 and 575. For complete provenance information see entry for "Harding, Silvester. Dr. Farmer." Subject: The illustration to Taming of the shrew depicts act IV, sc. 1, Petruchio scolding his servant for incorrectly removing the spur from Petruchio's boot: "Petruchio: Out, you rogue! You pluck my foot awry ..." Katherine watches in the background. The All's well illustration shows act IV, sc. 3, the soldier removing the blindfold from Parolles, Bertrand and two others gathered around, Parolles on his knees: "First Sold.: ...So look about you, know you any here? Ber.: Good morrow, noble Captain..." This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text. Please consult Curator for assistance
