General notes
Artist: Work is possibly that of Captain Gabriel Bray who is noted in Mallalieu as an amateur topographer and marine painter, "his drawing ... poor but pleasant." This possible identification is taken solely from a rather faint signature and is highly questionable. The drawing that bears the possible signature is that of Anne Hathaway's cottage (after p. 14), and the signature is located in the left hand corner of the triangular patch of road found in the lower right section of the drawing Provenance: Items are glued onto pages which have been tipped into volume one of an extra illustrated copy of the Works of Shakespeare, 1881 edition, edited by Staunton (before p. 13 and after p. 14 and 62). For complete provenance and information on the volumes see entry for "Anonymous. Shakespeare's crest." Subject: The drawings illustrate Shakespeare's birthplace on Henley Street, Anne Hathaway's Cottage and Holy Trinity Church. (Subject identification taken by sight, not from label) Surfaces of paintings are slightly abraded. The coloring in two of the works is quite similar, being predominantly greens and blues. One item has a faint signature (possibly) but the other two are unsigned This record contains unverified data from old cards and may contain incorrect or incomplete text.
