General notes
Title devised by cataloger The tempest, Merry wives of Windsor, Taming of the shrew, and Twelfth-night, bound in 2 volumes, each illustrated with five plates by Robert Smirke. Plays are separately signed and paginated, and each has its own title page; there is no general title page. "The first of a projected edition ... in 37 numbers, of which only four appeared" (Jaggard, p. 465). The four plays might also be considered as separate plays rather than a collection, due to the lack of a general title page (Folger card catalog) Imprint from Tempest title page. Plays dated 1821 except for Twelfth-night, which is dated 1822, and has additional imprint information: "Hurst, Robinson, & Co., Cheapside" following Rodwell & Martin
