General notes
There exist three virtually identical issues of the Poems written by Shakespear, published for Bell in 1774, with different settings of type. The issues can initially be distinguished by pagination, and by points on leaves B1 and L3. This is the only issue where the pagination is continuous to p. 36. Other distinguishing features of this issue: the leaves measure approximately 17 cm high; leaf B1 has a catchword, and the fingerprint of B1 shows the sign 'B' directly underneath 'de' in the word above it; and leaf L3 is signed and correctly printed [page] 173. The other two issues have pagination continuous to p. 29, and 'B' of leaf B1 falls directly underneath '$o' [where "$" designates a space] Issued individually, or as Vol. IX for Bell's edition of Shakespeare's plays, 1774 Signatures: B¹² C⁸ D-M¹² N⁴ Engraved title page Date precedes booksellers' names in imprint 'Vol. IX' on direction lines of first leaf in a signature With a final leaf of advertisements for Bell
