This record comprises two issues with the same settings of type, printed on slightly different sizes of paper: large paper copies, of which 25 sets were printed, measuring approximately 26 cm, and regular paper copies, measuring approximately 23 cm. At least some of the large paper copies have additional engraved portraits and genre scenes published by E. and S. Harding (ESTC and Jaggard) Dodsley's collection of old plays edited by Isaac Reed Printed by H. Baldwin (ESTC) Each vol. with a half-title and a vol. title page. Extra-illustrated with approximately 550 prints, including portraits of Shakespeare, his editors and commentators, authors of works from which Shakespeare borrowed plots and characters, and historical figures mentioned in the Prolegomena and notes to the plays, as well as topographical views of settings of Shakespeare's plays; only a very few prints depict actors in Shakespearean roles. One original drawing of 'Glames Castle, Forfarshire' (v. 7, after p. 350) cataloged separately. Armorial bookplate and autograph of Charles Walmesley in most volumes; manuscript note pasted on inside front cover of v. 1 attributes extra-illustration to a Mr. Thayne. Purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Folger from Maggs Bros., November 1928. An index of the engravings in this copy cataloged as Folger MS S.a.159
